The Second Amendment Is Here To Stay

Our amended rights are crucial to our freedom and protection. The 2nd Amendment of the United States Bill of Rights clearly states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

People have always taken a stance and voiced their opinions on what they believe what is right and what is wrong. For years on end, this amendment has been at the center of many debates. In this particular subject, there are two sides: gun control and anti-gun gontrol.

Something those who are uneducated on firearms get confused about is the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Many believe “AR” stands for automatic rifle, but this is incorrect. “AR” stands for the name of the company that developed it: ArmaLite rifle, while the 15 stands for 15th edition.

There is a huge difference between a semi-automatic firearm and an assault. A semi-automatic firearm only allows one bullet to shoot out when the trigger is pulled. An assault rifle can shoot more than one round when you pull the trigger, which in fact has been restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.

Another reason an AR-15 may get confused with an assault rifle, such as M-16, is because of their similar body style. Although they may look similar, they are used for polar opposite reasons. AR-15’s are typically used for a few reasons: hunting, going to the shooting range, and defense in one’s home. M-16’s, on the other hand, were created for military use.

Something many 2nd Amendment supporters are afraid of is absolute government control. It is believed that by taking this right away, the government will turn from a democratic-republic to a tyranny.

If the government becomes too powerful and out of control, without the 2nd Amendment right, there will be no way for citizens to protect themselves.

The most popular argument gun control supporters make is more gun control means less gun related deaths. On the contrary, 2nd Amendment supporters believe gun ownership deters crime better than stricter gun laws.

Criminals and cruel-minded people will still get ahold of a firearm whether it is legal or not. Non-law abiding citizens break the law all the time, so what difference would it really make?

Imagine if an intruder came into your home with an illegal firearm. Some may suggest you should just call the police but the intruder will most likely find you faster than the police arrive will arrive. If you own a firearm, you would be able to defend and protect yourself.

Placing restrictions on gun ownership will only increase the amount of gun-related deaths because there will be no way for victims to protect themselves in life threatening situations.

Mass shootings are a horrible thing and even that is an understatement. Yes, a gun is used in

a mass shooting. This does not mean to gun is to be blamed.

A gun does not shoot by itself. Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

If a gun is resting on a wall, untouched by anyone, nothing will happen. All guns, whether it be automatic or not, must be operated by a person. Everything comes down to the person using the gun.

The 2nd Amendment is just as important as any of the other 26 amendments. Someone who supports the other amendments, such as freedom of speech, religion, and press (1st Amendment), could be considered a hypocrite. These amendments are rights given to American citizens and once they’re gone, our country will not be the land of the free anymore.

Stand up and protect your amended rights; don’t tear them down.
